On top of being the first line of defense against inclement weather, the roof also plays a critical role in establishing your property’s curb appeal. It is, after all, the first thing people see when they look at your home from the street. As such, it’s important that you pick the right color for your shingles.
Quality Assurance Roofing, your local roofer, shares a few tips to keep in mind when choosing roof colors for your property.
Shingle and Brick
Rule of thumb: the color of the roof shingles must always correspond to the color of your home’s brick. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the same color. In fact, a contrast between the brick and shingles actually looks more attractive. That said, the contrast must still transition properly between the two.
A good example is the quintessential red brick. It’s a bold color so it contrasts well with warmer tones that are in its same color sphere. These include browns, yellows and wooden tones.
Dark vs. Light
Both dark and light colors have their own pros and cons when it comes to creating a color scheme for your roofing system. Darker roofs are rarer and generally more eye-catching, but are about 10 degrees warmer. That said, this applies only to completely dark colors like black. Grays, browns and greens are technically dark colors, but they aren’t any warmer than light-colored shingles.
Light-colored roofs are cooler and can actually improve the energy efficiency of the roof as it reflects radiant heat instead of absorbing it like darker tones do.
Color and Roofing Materials
It’s also important to remember that your choice of roofing material determines how many colors are available to you. Wood roofs, for example, are restricted to wood stains and light to deep shades of brown. This is in contrast to asphalt and metal roofs – both having large color palettes.
One last tip: make it a point to check your prospective colors in all types of light. You can do this by placing a sample shingle in a sunny place and just check how it looks under the sun over the course of the day.
