Things Your Roof Is Trying to Tell You

You don’t need to be roofing contractor to know that your roof can tell you a few things about its current condition. Though it may not speak, your roof will show signs of problems, some more specific than others. Here are some of them.

Water Spots on the Ceiling

If your ceiling has large, uneven spots that appeared after an intense rain or storm, it means that the roof has a leak. Ceiling leaks are tricky because they may not always correspond to the hole directly above them. This is a clear sign your roof has been damaged and requires an immediate fix.

Gutters Full of Granules

If you see asphalt shingle granules build up in your gutters, it’s a sign your shingles are already deteriorating. Though having a small amount every so often is normal wear and tear, when you encounter a large deposit of granules in your downspouts, it might be time to check your residential roofing system.

Black Stains on the Roof

Black spots on your roof is a sign of blue-green algae, which makes the roof, and by extension the home, unappealing. Though it’s not as urgent an issue as leaks, finding the proper tools to clean up algae is still important. This also lets you know if your roof’s algae protection has already expired and needs a replacement.

Cracked Granules

When cracks appear on your shingles, you will need to replace them at once. A set of brittle shingles means you have weak protection against the elements, which would mean potential water intrusion and structural damage.
