Things to Consider During Metal Roof Seaming

Standing seam metal roofing is popular for both commercial and residential structures. They are made of metal panels that run from the roof’s ridge down to its edge. Ensuring the seams are weathertight is a critical part of the installation process. Improper metal roof seaming can result in the voiding of the manufacturer’s warranty and leaks.

Here are important considerations when it comes to metal roof seaming.

Installers

The roofer who will do the seaming must be properly trained to ensure that the seaming process is properly managed. Most manufacturers offer installation training to installers.

Equipment

Contractors should use the right seaming equipment for the specific roof panel system being installed. Improper usage of the equipment can ruin the panels.

Hand Crimper

Roofing professionals typically use metal clips to secure metal panels, spacing them according to engineering and construction requirements. Hand crimpers form the seams around the clips and any end laps. Improper use of this tool usually results in faulty seaming.

Electrical Sources

Most professional seamers have an AC/DC motor that requires 10 or 15 amps and 120 volts. The best option is a dedicated electrical circuit from a temporary electrical pole or an existing building electrical panel. Another option is a generator with 15-amp capacity, which is only meant for seamer use.

Safety

Electric seamers weigh a lot and can cause injuries if not used or secured properly. They should always be tied off with a safety line, the same kind workers use, and not with a standard rope or an electrical cord. Moreover, the safety line needs to be tied properly to the seamer and attached to something sturdy.
