Losing Granules on Your Asphalt Shingle Roof

Over the years, many local homeowners have faced the problem of granule loss on their asphalt shingle roofs. However, this is no cause for panic. Granule loss is only natural because of the usual wear and tear the roof experiences.

An asphalt shingle roof uses granules to protect the shingles from constant exposure to heat and increase fire resistance. You might become aware of granule loss when you find them in your yard or rain gutters. When this happens, it’s best to contact a professional to assist you. Here’s a helpful overview on granule loss on your asphalt shingle roof.

Age of Your Roof

There is always the possibility of granule loss, no matter how old your asphalt shingle roof is. However, there could be different reasons why. If your roof is old and you’re experiencing granule loss, you most likely have to replace your roof as soon as possible. Over time, the bond between the granules and asphalt shingle becomes looser. As the roof ages, the adhesion qualities will dissolve, resulting in eventual granule loss.

The case is different with new roofs, though. If you’re facing granule loss with a new roof, it might be due to its packaging, shipping or installation. During the manufacture of shingles, the granules are embedded into the asphalt. However, there are instances wherein some excess granules might not have embedded themselves properly, and instead, they become linked with the embedded ones. To be sure, check the shingles to see if the embedded granules are intact. If they are, and you are still experiencing granule loss, contact your roofing contractor as the product may be defective.

Worries About Weather

Shingles are specifically made to withstand bad weather. Nevertheless, heavy rainfall and hailstorms could still contribute to granules becoming loose and wearing off. Granule loss does not immediately mean damage, though. Usually, it simply means that normal weathering has taken place. If you cannot identify other areas, such as impact points, where the granules were lost, there is no need for roof repairs or replacement.

Even so, it’s still a great idea to contact experts for your roofing needs. Get in touch with Quality Assurance Roofing, and fill out our contact form to set an appointment. For residents in Rogers and Springdale, AR, call (479) 279-8500. For residents in Branson West, MO, call (417) 799-7889.
