How Does Roofing Ventilation Work?

One thing that’s often overlooked when it comes to roofing projects is the roof’s ventilation. This factor is vital to your roof’s proper health and performance, which is why it’s important to understand its importance and how it works.

How Does Roof Ventilation Work

The warm and moist air in your living space will rise up into your attic and can accumulate over time. Having sufficient roof ventilation allows the heat and humidity to exit your attic to replace it with fresh, cool air from the intake vent. This is done with the use of two attic ventilation systems:

  • Passive Ventilation
Passive ventilation utilizes exhaust vents on your roof ridges, which allow hot air to exit. This alleviates the pressure building up in your attic by pulling in fresh air through the vents present in the soffits. You’ll need to work with a roofing contractor to properly size the soffit vents to ensure proper air flow.
  • Mechanical Ventilation
It’s highly recommended to install a mechanical ventilation system if you have a large attic since passive ventilation won’t suffice. This system utilizes mechanical fans to drive humid air out of your attic. These fans draw power from your main line or via solar panels.

Benefits of Roof Ventilation

  • Reduces Monthly Utility Costs
Heat accumulating in your attic can drive hot air into your living room, making it feel uncomfortable. In turn, this might force you to use your air conditioning unit more. With proper ventilation, you’ll rely less on your air conditioning unit since it isn’t as hot, reducing stress on your cooling unit as well.
  • Prevents Mold and Mildew Growth
Remember that mold spores thrive in damp and moist environments. Keeping your attic dry prevents mold growth, keeping your home healthy and in good condition.
