Consequences of Delaying Your Roof Replacement

Roof replacement should never be neglected if your roofing system is already showing signs of deterioration or severe damage. If you fail to schedule the replacement at an appropriate time, these are some of the consequences you might have to face soon.

Utility Bill Increase

Severe rain and windstorm can tear your roof membrane, exposing the inner layers of your roofing system to outdoor elements. Moisture could reach your insulation and degrade the material, reducing its ability to insulate your home properly. This could lead to an increase in your utility bills.

Water-Related Damage

Older roofs are more susceptible to water damage because of the gaps in the roofing materials caused by wear and tear. Small roof leaks on aging roofs spread fast, increasing the property’s risk of suffering major damage.

Shorter Lifespan of Building Materials

Drywalls, concrete and other building components of your home will be at risk of severe damage as the materials degrade and diminish in functionality — effectively reducing their lifespan. It will be expensive to restore these parts, especially since you also have to consider the cost of installing a new roof.

Mold Growth

Mold and fungi grow in damp and dark spaces. Indoor humidity is usually higher in homes with old roofs, and this allows mold and fungi to grow and release spores. Removing mold and fungi will be difficult and costly in severe cases.

Animal Infiltration

Older roofs are easier for raccoons and rats to chew and access. And once these animals have infiltrated your roof, they will likely build their nests in your attic and make it their home.

Structural Damage

Roof rafters are the first to suffer from severe water damage if you fail to replace your roof on time. They will eventually weaken as they become consistently exposed to rain, heat and other elements.
