When it comes to the topic of the roofing system, some homeowners tend to overlook important components of the roof. 1. Continuous Flashing
One of the kinds of flashing that you can install on your roofing system is the continuous flashing. Usually, this is installed on the joints between a vertical wall and sloped roof to prevent water from infiltrating the roof.
2. Chimney Flashing
If you have a chimney on your roof, you can expect it to come with flashing in a few key areas, such as a continuous flashing at the bottom, step flashing, which is made of right angled metal pieces on the sides, saddle flashing on the top and even cap flashing over the edges. By applying these kinds of flashing on your chimney, you can avoid leaks that can cause damage to your roof.
3. Skylight Flashing
Similar to the chimney flashing, if you have skylights on your roof, they’ll also come with its own set of flashing systems. Like before, the flashing will be installed along the base, sides and top of the skylights.
4. Roof Valley Flashing
The valley where the two planes of your roofing system meet is a critical point for flashing installation as this area is especially vulnerable to water infiltration. Unlike other kinds of flashing, however, this flashing must be installed over the top of the building’s felt before the material of your roof is installed.
5. Drip Edges
Finally, roofers will also install drip edge flashing on your roof. By doing so, they can prevent water from seeping beneath the edges of the roof rakes and eaves. According to experts, this flashing is installed under the roofing felt along the eaves and over the felt along the rakes.
