4 Questions to Ask a Prospective Roofing Contractor

The success of a roofing project, be it minor repairs or a complete roof replacement, hinges on getting the right roofer for the job. Here are the questions you have to ask before choosing a roofing contractor.

1. Are you licensed and insured? In most states, anyone doing roofing work is required to be licensed or registered. The Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board issues licenses for home improvement contractors at multiple levels depending on the project cost and type. Your prospective contractors should have no problem providing proof of their licensure and insurance, the latter of which should have two types of coverage: general liability insurance and workers’ compensation. Both license and insurance are assurances that your roof will follow the local codes and be insured against accidental property damage and workplace injuries.

2. Do you have a designation from the manufacturer? A roofing contractor that offers products from a manufacturer should have certifications or designations from the manufacturer. This is assurance that the roofing contractor will be using authentic products with full warranty coverage. Quality Assurance Roofing holds not just one, but three: GAF Master Elite® contractor, CertainTeed® SELECT ShingleMaster™ and Owens Corning® Platinum Preferred Contractor.

3. What is the scope of your work? A prospective roofer should be able to explain the scope of your roofing project: the amount of work that will be done to your roof, how long it will take and who will work on it. This indicates a clear understanding of your goals, ensuring that the roofer will be less likely to commit major mistakes. When a prospective contractor sends you an estimate, make sure that everything you have discussed with the contractor is reflected in it.

4. What are your plans to protect my property? Roof installation and repairs generate a lot of dust and debris. A good contractor should have a plan to prevent accidental damage to property (which is preferable over filing a general liability insurance claim) as well as a waste management plan. Such plans should include covering surrounding landscaping with tarps or similar material, and covering paths with boards.
