3 Common Flat Roof Issues

Homeowners are rarely proactive with their roofing problems. In fact, nearly 100% of the time, people only call the roofers when their roof is already showing signs of leakage. For flat roofs, this could be particularly problematic.

Our experts at Quality Assurance Roofing discuss three of the most common issues you can expect on a flat roof system and what you can do to resolve them.

Pooling Water

Water flows naturally off a pitched roof. Unfortunately, for flat roofs, this is not always the case. While flat roofs are slightly sloped for this very reason, they are still prone to pooling water, especially after some heavy rains. Ask your roofers to check the slope of your flat roof so they can make an adjustment if necessary.

Blistering

Water expands when it evaporates. Small amounts of water trapped under a flat roof coating or membrane can cause blisters under a hot sun. You can prevent this issue from happening in the first place by checking possible sources of water or moisture. Clear away any obstructions on your downpipes and gutter systems to always ensure optimal water flow.

Flashing Problems

One issue unique to flat roofs is related to flashing. The 90-degree angles that connect the roof membrane to surrounding “walls” make it challenging for flashing materials to remain secure. When these flashing strips fail, water can penetrate the assembly, and you will need roof repair services right away. Regular inspection can nip flashing problems in the bud before they cause excessive amounts of damage.
